Monfils outlasts Goffin in 3 sets at Rogers Cup

TORONTO — Gael Monfils outlasted Belgium’s David Goffin 7-6 (5), 2-6, 6-4 on Thursday in the third round of the Rogers Cup.
Monfils, the 10th-seeded Frenchman who won the Citi Open on Sunday in Washington, won when Goffin put a backhand into the net at York University’s Aviva Centre. Monfils will face Canadian Milos Raonic or American qualifier Jared Donaldson in the quarterfinals.
