Hot bats help Cole Train go distance vs. M’s

PITTSBURGH — Gerrit Cole raised both arms above his head, walked off the mound and shook hands with catcher Francisco Cervelli before hugging manager Clint Hurdle, calmly celebrating his first professional complete game after leading the Pirates to a 10-1 win over the Mariners at PNC Park on Wednesday night.
Cole earned the title of ace last season, finishing fourth in the National League Cy Young Award voting and posting a 2.60 ERA over 208 innings. But he had never finished a game he started, until Wednesday night. In 87 Major League starts before this, he had recorded exactly one out in the ninth inning. In 44 Minor League starts, he never went the distance. As efficiently as he worked through the Mariners’ lineup in his third start off the disabled list, Cole probably could have pitched most of the night. He needed only 93 pitches, 69 of them for strikes, as he struck out six without a walk.
