Mariners land Storen from Jays for Benoit

PITTSBURGH — In an exchange of struggling veteran right-handed relievers, the Mariners acquired former closer Drew Storen and cash considerations from the Blue Jays on Tuesday in exchange for longtime setup man Joaquin Benoit.
Storen, 28, was designated for assignment on Sunday by Toronto after posting a 6.21 ERA in 33 1/3 innings. He gave up three runs in the Blue Jays’ 14-5 loss to Seattle on Saturday when he allowed a three-run homer to Nelson Cruz in the eighth.
Storen saved 43 games in 2011 and 29 last year for the Nationals before being traded to Toronto for outfielder Ben Revere. But things never clicked with the Blue Jays as his velocity dropped several miles per hour, though he still struck out 32 batters.
