Trade Deadline: Bruce market is buzzing
- Updated: July 27, 2016
Many potential deals are in the works as the non-waiver Trade Deadline — Monday at 4 p.m. ET — approaches. Here is a look at the latest news, reports and rumors.
Bruce pursuit heating upJay Bruce has loomed as a potential Trade Deadline mover for some time, but the Reds are now showing more urgency in discussions about their right fielder, according to ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick.
Coming off a pair of disappointing seasons, Bruce entered Tuesday hitting .272/.326/.564 in 2016, with two of his 23 home runs coming on Monday at San Francisco. The All-Star’s 77 RBIs were tied for the National League lead.
Not only is Bruce one of the top hitters available, but the 29-year-old comes with a $13 million club option for 2017. Given that, it’s no surprise that the Reds are seeking a top prospect for Bruce, according to Crasnick, who reported that the Giants, Dodgers and Indians could be among those interested.
Cashner on the move?Andrew Cashner could be getting closer to becoming a former Padre.
MLB.com’s Jon Morosi reported Tuesday afternoon trade talks are progressing regarding the San Diego right-hander, who allowed three runs on four hits and struck out six in his start Tuesday night against the Blue Jays.
There is no word yet on where Cashner could wind up, but the Blue Jays, Marlins, Rangers and Astros all have been connected to him in the past.
Cashner, 29, entered Tuesday 4-7 with a 4.79 ERA in 15 starts for the Padres this season.
A free agent at season’s end, Cashner appeared to be on the verge of a breakout a couple years ago, going 15-16 with a 2.87 ERA in 50 games (45 starts) from 2013-14, but he has since been inconsistent.
Cashner has turned in three solid starts this month, however, including his last two. He threw six innings of one-run ball against the Giants on July 15, and he held the Cardinals to one run and struck out eight in 5 2/3 innings in his last outing.
Yankees may not be done dealing The Yankees might already have traded left-hander Aroldis Chapman, but that doesn’t mean they’re done dealing with an eye toward the near future.
New York is considering itself both buyers and sellers, according to MLB Network insider Ken Rosenthal, who reported Tuesday morning the Yankees also are looking to add controllable starting pitchers.
“We’re not playing in a narrow-minded world,” Yankees general manager Brian Cashman told Rosenthal.
The Yankees have several pieces they could sell, highlighted by designated hitter/outfielder Carlos Beltran and lefty reliever Andrew Miller. Beltran is a free agent at year’s end, while Miller is under club control for two more seasons.
Although Miller, thanks to his dominance and friendly contract that pays him $9 million in each of the next two seasons, could especially net a large haul in return, there is reason for the Yankees to hold onto him. Injuries have hurt the club this season, but New York still has several young building blocks such as shortstop Didi Gregorius, second baseman Starlin Castro and injured first baseman Greg Bird.
The Yankees also have outfielder Aaron Judge and catcher Gary Sanchez, the club’s No. 3 and 4 prospects, respectively, per MLB Pipeline, waiting in the wings.
Although CC Sabathia has had a resurgence this season, the rotation is lacking behind right-hander Masahiro Tanaka. Righty Michael Pineda has been mentioned in trade rumors, as has inconsistent right-hander Nathan Eovaldi.
Hellickson drawing interest on trade market Teams continue to show interest in Phillies right-hander Jeremy Hellickson, who threw six shutout …
