TEMPE, Ariz. — Dennis Green’s death on Friday hit closer to home for one Arizona Cardinals player.
Larry Fitzgerald first met Green as a 9-year-old growing up in Minnesota, where Green was the coach of the Vikings from 1992-2001. Fitzgerald’s father, Larry Fitzgerald Sr., had befriended Green when Green was the head coach at Northwestern University in the early 1980s. Fitzgerald called Green “sort of an uncle to me.”
Years later, Green would become Fitzgerald’s first NFL coach.
In a first-person article for The Players’ Tribune, Fitzgerald shared his feelings for and memories of Green, who died from cardiac arrest at 67.
