Brendan Rodgers will be forced to field a makeshift defence in Kazakhstan as Celtic continue their quest to renew acquaintance with the Champions League group stages on Wednesday.

Erik Sviatchenko (groin) did not travel with the squad that flew out to Central Asia on Monday for the third qualifying round first leg against Astana; he joins Jozo Simunovic and Dedryck Boyata on the sidelines while young Kristoffer Ajer is also an absentee with a broken thumb.

The club’s latest recruit Kolo Toure is also absent meaning Mikael Lustig is likely to be asked to reprise the centre-half role he performed against Leicester City on Saturday in tandem with Efe Ambrose; Irish youngster Eoghan O’Connell, who started and scored against Leicester is another option.
