Rio 2016 Reveals That 19 Of 31 Blocks In Athletes Village Yet To Pass Safety Tests

The Rio 2016 organising committee has acknowledged that 19 of the 31 buildings in the Athletes Village have yet to pass safety tests as the competitors start to pour into Olympic city 2016 for the start of the Games next week.

Fewer than 10% of the competitors have already arrived in Brazil – and there to great them have been “flooded floors, broken elevators, mould and holes in the ceiling” according to media reports far and wide this morning as team managers, athletes and volunteers get the word out to the world.

Organisers have promised to resolve the problems by Thursday. Australians have found alternative hotel accommodation in the meantime, while Dutch and Italian delegations have lodged complaints and spoke of seeking compensation, not that that will help the athletes much.

Worryingly, stress tests – due to have been carried out months ago – are said to be  less than halfway complete because the 17-storey buildings were delivered behind schedule, water, gas and electricity only recently connected.
