Toronto reportedly front-runner for Upton Jr.

TORONTO — The non-waiver Trade Deadline is seven days away, and the rumors surrounding Melvin Upton Jr. and the Blue Jays just won’t seem to go away.
According to MLB Network contributor Ken Rosenthal, Toronto is considered the front-runner for Upton, but the Indians and Orioles also remain in the mix. The Padres outfielder has been linked to the Blue Jays for the past several weeks, but the trade talks appear to be picking up steam with the Aug. 1 Deadline on the horizon.
Upton is earning $15.45 million this season and has one more year at $16.45 million remaining on his deal. The Padres likely would have to cover some of those costs, but exactly how much would depend on the quality of prospects heading the other way.
“We definitely like this lineup, there’s no doubt about that,” Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said. “It’s a good lineup. I don’t know what you could do to improve it, to be honest with you. Maybe there is somebody, but it would have to be a big-impact guy, I would think.”
