Ed Chamberlin selects his six horses to follow ahead of Glorious Goodwood, including Roger Varian’s White Lake.

It was very exciting to have Francesca Cumani named as my co-presenter next summer. I’m thrilled that she’s part of the ITV team and I’m really look forward to working with her.

It’s important to remember that amongst all the speculation about who will be added to the ITV setup that it’s the racing and the sport that really matters and a presenter’s job is to reflect the story and get the best out of the pundits and analysts.

This is one of the great weeks of the racing calendar and one I’m particularly excited about presenting next year. Glorious Goodwood and the Galway Festival. Wonderful. We had plenty of success at Royal Ascot and let’s hope for a repeat with six of the best for Goodwood this week…

Fire Fighting was a progressive handicapper a couple of years ago, taking full advantage of a lenient mark. His win ratio isn’t the same these days, but finished third in this race last year off an 8lb higher rating and as Johnston has a habit of aiming his handicappers at this meeting, his backers can expect him to run right up to his best. If he does, I can’t see him finishing out of the frame and each-way backers should be rewarded with a return of some sort. Ground and trip will be fine and as always with these Goodwood handicaps, you’re just hoping for a clear passage in running. I like the booking of Adam Kirby, who is riding with enormous confidence at the moment.

Gabrial The Hero – each-way (3.45 Tuesday) Richard Fahey

Two solid efforts over marathon trips in both the Chester Cup and Northumberland Plate this season, giving the impression he’s all about stamina. His Chester Cup run suggests that to be the case, but I’m not convinced and thought he was one-paced and plodding along at the end of both races. The drop back to 1m 6f is going to be more to his liking, as he showed good form over middle-distances in his younger days, and the guaranteed pace will allow his jockey to ride a patient race and hopefully get him to the front where it matters …
