Padres storm past Nationals late in slugfest

WASHINGTON — The Nationals and Padres found themselves in a slugfest on Sunday afternoon at Nationals Park. When it was over, the Padres outslugged the Nationals, 10-6.
The game was tied at 6 when the Padres scored the go-ahead run in the ninth off closer Jonathan Papelbon. After Wil Myers walked, Matt Kemp struck out, while Myers advanced to second on a wild pitch by Papelbon. Yangervis Solarte came to plate and singled to center, scoring Myers and giving the Padres a 7-6 lead. The Padres then broke the game open on Alexei Ramirez’s three-run double. Manager Dusty Baker then took Papelbon out of the game in favor of Yusmeiro Petit, who managed to escape the inning.
Padres left-hander Christian Fredrich and Nationals right-hander Lucas Giolito, the top prospect in baseball, started the game and neither was able to get past the fourth.
