Carew: Rose over Suzuki as career hit king

COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. — Rod Carew will gladly welcome Ichiro Suzuki into the Hall of Fame fraternity when the time comes. But baseball has only one career hit leader in Carew’s estimation, and his name is Pete Rose.
Suzuki, 42, has 2,996 hits in the major leagues and is likely to become the 30th member of the 3,000 club during the Miami Marlins’ current homestand. Between Suzuki’s tenure with the Orix Blue Wave in Japan and his production over 16 seasons with the Seattle Mariners, New York Yankees and the Marlins, he has 4,274 hits compared to the 4,256 that Rose accumulated over 24 MLB seasons.
“I have tremendous respect for Ichiro,” Carew said. “For a young man to come here in such a short time and get 3,000 hits, that’s saying something. But you can’t take it away from Pete. Pete is the Hit King here in this country, and you can’t add the two (leagues) together to …
