Semien sees 96-game starting streak end

OAKLAND — A’s shortstop Marcus Semien wasn’t in Friday’s starting lineup, ending his streak of 96 straight games started.
Semien owned the team’s longest consecutive start streak since Miguel Tejada started 162 games in 2003, and was tied for the Major League lead in consecutive games played with Philadelphia’s Odubel Herrera. He’s been a mainstay in an A’s lineup hit hard by injuries, and his daily pregame work with A’s assistant Ron Washington has drawn the praise of manager Bob Melvin.
After a conversation with Washington and an evaluation of Semien’s recent stretch, Melvin decided the shortstop finally needed a day off, but did note he could possibly enter Friday’s game in a late-inning role if necessary.
“It’s just as much mentally as physically,” Melvin said. “It’s a grind playing shortstop every single day. He’s been out there every single day. It just looked like maybe a little bit recently here it might be time for a day.”
