International Champions Cup guide
- Updated: July 20, 2016
Ahead of Friday’s kick-off in the International Champions Cup, we bring you the ultimate guide to the worldwide competition.
Seventeen high-profile clubs will take part in three mini-tournaments in four locations – Australia, China, the United States and Europe – from July 22 to August 13.
Respective league champions Leicester City, Juventus, Bayern Munich, PSG and Barcelona are among those in action, as well as Pep Guardiola’s new side Manchester City and their rivals Manchester United under Jose Mourinho. Some of the biggest clashes will be shown live on Sky Sports.
The teams invited to take part have been split between the locations and will each play up to three games, with the champions of each group decided on a points-based system.
We’ve picked out 10 top tussles to follow – all times are BST and dates correspond with UK coverage.
Saturday July 23 – Celtic v Leicester City at Celtic Park, Glasgow (5.30pm, Sky Sports 1)
Premier League champions Leicester captured worldwide attention when they stormed to league victory last season, and will kick off their inaugural ICC appearance with a short trip to Glasgow to face Scottish Premiership winners Celtic.
Brendan Rodgers will be hoping for a better showing from his side after a less than stellar effort in the first leg of the Champions League qualifier, while the Foxes are likely to include some of their new signings – speedy forward Ahmed Musa one of them.
Monday July 25 – Manchester City v Manchester United at the National Stadium, Beijing (1pm, follow on skysports.com and Sky Sports’ mobile and iPad apps)
The first ever Manchester derby to be played outside of the UK comes during the tournament, although box-office United signing Zlatan Ibrahimovic has not travelled with the United squad after being granted an extended break.
United have already indicated that the likes of Wayne Rooney and Marcus Rashford are unlikely to feature heavily after their Euro 2016 involvement, while the same could apply to City stars such as David Silva and Sergio Aguero, but that’s unlikely to deter rivals fans eagerly looking for clues from the first Pep v Jose meeting of the season.
Tuesday July 26 – Juventus v Tottenham at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, Australia (11am, Sky Sports 1)
Mauricio Pochettino’s men are making the long trip to Melbourne to take part in the ICC this year, and it’s a tough first game down under as they take on Serie A champions Juventus at the iconic MCG.
Juve have already confirmed that 12 players – including Manchester United target Paul Pogba and captain Gigi Buffon – will not be making the journey after their exploits at Euro 2016, with a similar policy expected from Tottenham.
Wednesday July 27 – …
