Anthony Rizzo has best at-bat of his career in Cubs’ 5-1 win over Mets

CHICAGO – Chicago Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo agreed with the assertion his third-inning at-bat against lefty Steven Matz and the New York Mets on Monday night might have been the best of his career.
“Yeah, it was a good one,” Rizzo said after the Cubs’ 5-1 win. “Just battled there and fought some good pitches off.”
He’s underselling it. Lefty-on-lefty matchups aren’t easy for hitters, and after working the count to 2-2 Rizzo fouled off five straight pitches. Matz finally gave in, throwing an 83-mph changeup that Rizzo hit an estimated 425 feet for a three-run home run, breaking a scoreless tie.

“It was 2-2 for a while there,” Rizzo said. “I don’t think he wanted to go 3-2.”
