Rumor Roundup: Yanks covet Cubs’ Schwarber
- Updated: July 19, 2016
Rumors are swirling around the Yankees in advance of the Aug. 1 non-waiver Trade Deadline, and it’s looking increasingly likely that closer Aroldis Chapman will be on the move. The Cubs are in need of bullpen help, and the Yankees reportedly covet one of the Cubs’ rising young stars in slugger Kyle Schwarber, according to a report Monday from Jeff Passan of Yahoo! Sports.
While it seems unlikely the Cubs would be willing to part with Schwarber for Champan or Yankees setup man Andrew Miller straight up, Passan wonders if Chicago would seriously consider a deal if both relievers were included.
Schwarber, 23, suffered a torn ACL and LCL in his left knee in April and is out for the season. In 69 games as a rookie in 2015, Schwarber hit .246 with 16 home runs and six doubles.
The Cubs are among the favorites to win the World Series, and a key bullpen piece could put them over the top. Meanwhile, the Yankees are hovering around .500 and could be buyers or sellers in the next two weeks. For now, the speculation around Schwarber is an interesting topic throughout baseball.
