Oscar De La Hoya claims Liam Smith is most popular fighter in the UK

Oscar De La Hoya is no stranger to outlandish statements. After all, the head of Golden Boy is a promoter – he promotes. But in trying to sell the public on Canelo Alvarez vs. lightly-regarded Liam Smith in September, he went above and beyond the call of duty with his praise for Smith at a press conference today:
“Liam Smith is the most popular fighter right now in the UK.”
Smith (23-0-1, 13 KO) is the current WBO light middleweight champion, but has never fought outside of England and doesn’t even have a massive following there to begin with.
