Northeast sticks by superstition despite the heat

Kent skipper Sam Northeast crossed 1000 first-class runs for the summer as Kent continued to dominate neighbours Sussex in Tunbridge Wells.
At the mid-point of their County Championship match at Tunbridge Wells, Sussex had reached 69 for 1 in reply to Kent’s season’s best total of 575 all out. The visitors’ sole casualty was Harry Finch bowled when playing back in defence to a Mitch Claydon off-cutter that appeared to keep low.
Northeast had batted in a short sleeved sweater for well over six hours in the hottest conditions of the year to post the fourth century of a golden summer and the 15th of his career.
“I was thinking to myself at one point why on earth have I got this jumper on, but it’s become a superstition,” conceded Northeast. “We’ve a nice total on the board and a lot of runs to play with but it’s going to be hard work for us tomorrow.
