Michael Stich: ‘I’m angry with ATP and ITF, the field was not qualitative’

Martin Klizan won the 2016 edition of the ATP Hamburg Open against Pablo Cuevas. But the strength of the field that played the tournament this year was quite week, with the 21st ranked Benoit Paire being the top-seed.
This year, because of the Olympics, the event’s scheduling coincided with the Davis Cup ties. This meant the tournament lost out on several players, who’d played the tournament last year, but skipped it this for the Davis Cup. 2015 finalist Fabio Fognini and his countryman Andreas Seppi and Roberto Bautista Agut were three such names.Not surprisingly, tournament director Martin Stich wasn’t happy about such a weakened playing field.
