Penn State QBs say they’re trying not to focus on position battle

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — With a backward cap and dark sunglasses, Penn State quarterback Trace McSorley seemed as relaxed about the quarterback competition Saturday as the fans in line waiting for his autograph.
McSorley addressed the battle during the Nittany Lions’ annual Lift for Life event, which raises money to fight rare diseases, but swore he wasn’t focused on which signal-caller would earn the starting nod. That hasn’t been his summer priority.

“Right now I’m not worried about a competition,” the redshirt sophomore said. “I’m worried about each day coming in and proving myself and improving the team. And that’s all I’m going to worry about right now.
“I feel like if you think about it too much, you’ll drive yourself crazy.”
Coach James Franklin was adamant last month that there remains a “legitimate competition” between the more-experienced McSorley and redshirt freshman Tommy Stevens. Franklin said he doesn’t anticipate naming a starter until a few weeks into camp.
