The week in interesting and unusual stats (May 30 – June 4)

Each Sunday in this space, we bring you some of our favorite quirks, oddities and unusual plays from the week in baseball. Sometimes, the week gives us such a variety that it’s best to do a whirlwind tour. Many thanks to our friends at Baseball Reference and the Elias Sports Bureau for research assistance.

Four pitchers threw complete games on Monday, the most in a day since August 2014. Jeff Locke’s three-hit shutout with no walks was the first such game by a Pirates hurler since Paul Maholm’s five years ago. Locke recorded just one strikeout; Maholm was also the most recent Pirate to do that in a three-hit shutout.

Tuesday’s scoreboard featured two teams (the Braves and Cubs) being held to just one hit, while the Mariners and Rockies combined for 12 homers and a combined 33 runs. The most recent day on which two teams were one-hit and two teams scored at least 16 runs was July 14, 1991.

The Mariners game featured two Padres position players taking the mound, which made Seattle the only team (so far) to have a position player pitch in each of the past three seasons. Excluding the “all nine positions” stunts, Christian Bethancourt became the only player in the live-ball era to pitch, catch, play the infield and play the outfield in the same game.
