With Win In 800 Freestyle (8:24.87), Leah Smith Carrying Momentum Into Trials

As quickly as it can be built, momentum can just as swiftly float away. Whether she can hold onto it or not will eventually be determined, but Leah Smith is headed to the United States Olympic Trials in Omaha with considerable momentum. She proved that much over the three days she spent in Indianapolis for the USA Swimming Pro Series.

Following up on career-best performances in the 200 freestyle (1:56.64) and 400 freestyle (4:03.33), Smith put up the ninth-fastest time in the world in the 800 free, with a clocking of 8:24.87. That time is the second-quickest of Smith’s career and provided the University of Virginia product with a two-plus second decision over Canadian Brittany MacLean (8:27.32).

When the Olympic Trials commence in three weeks, Smith will be more likely to leave the Midwest with a ticket to the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro than not. While she has been an Olympic hopeful for some time, Smith has used the 2016 campaign to firmly establish herself as a favorite. An argument can be made that Smith will be the No. 2 choice in the 400 free and 800 free behind Katie Ledecky, and she’s among the leading contenders for relay slot in the 200 freestyle.
