Fresh fastball helps Holland tame Mariners

ARLINGTON — Since allowing 11 earned runs in 2 2/3 innings to the Blue Jays on May 5, left-hander Derek Holland has been as consistent as they come for the Rangers’ rotation.
Holland set season-highs with seven strikeouts and seven innings pitched as the Rangers completed a three-game sweep over the Mariners with a 3-2 win Sunday afternoon at Globe Life Park.
The Rangers hold a season-high three-game lead in the American League West over the Mariners and have the best record in the American League (34-22) thanks to a season-best five-game winning streak.
“We obviously had to go in and make a statement against these guys,” Holland said. “At the same time we’re going to see them in less than five days. What we did was good, we just got to continue that now.”
