Romine injures thumb on Chapman warmup pitch

BALTIMORE — Yankees catcher Austin Romine left Saturday’s 8-6 win over the Orioles after injuring his left hand before the start of the bottom of the ninth inning.
With closer Aroldis Chapman warming up, a slider in the dirt hit the top of Romine’s thumbnail, bruising his thumb and forcing him out of the game.
“It’s weird, I didn’t understand it,” said Romine. “I was like, ‘How did I get hit in the thumb?’ I looked down and my glove was hanging off. Just a freak accident. It’s weird.”
“I don’t know if I’ve ever seen that,” said manager Joe Girardi, a former catcher.
X-rays were negative and Romine was confident that he could play in Sunday’s series finale if needed. Girardi wasn’t as convinced, suggesting Romine may feel …
