Matheny sticking with Rosenthal as closer

ST. LOUIS — A day after Trevor Rosenthal walked all three batters he faced in the Cardinals’ 5-1 loss to the Giants, manager Mike Matheny offered a vote of confidence in Rosenthal and said that the club is not considering a shuffle to any late-inning roles.
“There’s not going to be a new closer,” Matheny said.
The Cardinals believe Rosenthal’s command issues can be traced to the lack of save opportunities he’s had this season. Entering Saturday, the Cardinals have had 12 save chances this season, the fewest of any club in the Majors. Nine other teams have had at least twice as many.
The irregular work means that one-third of the way through the team’s season, Rosenthal has pitched on back-to-back days once. Fourteen of his …
