Wainwright takes tough-luck loss vs. Giants

ST. LOUIS — The San Francisco Giants complemented effective pitching with a fourth-inning offensive flurry Friday night to fend off the St. Louis Cardinals, 5-1. The Giants improved to 5-3 on their three-city trip, clinching no worse than a .500 record on their 10-game sojourn.

Giants starter Johnny Cueto (9-1) occasionally moved as if he still had the sore back that bothered him in his previous start last Sunday at Colorado. But he still had enough to win his sixth consecutive decision while allowing an unearned run and four hits in six innings. San Francisco’s bullpen blanked St. Louis through the final three innings to seal the Giants’ 18th victory in 22 games.

Cardinals starter Adam Wainwright delivered a respectable seven-inning performance but faltered in the fourth, when San Francisco scored two runs on four singles.
