Farrell hopes 5th-starter candidate will step up

BOSTON — The Red Sox next need a fifth starter on June 18, and manager John Farrell would like to see someone become a deserving candidate between now and then.
Veteran Clay Buchholz was recently demoted to the bullpen. Joe Kelly was optioned back to Triple-A Pawtucket after struggling in his second and third starts back from the disabled list.
Left-hander Henry Owens — currently at Triple-A — was not effective in his earlier stint with Boston this season. Roenis Elias — the lefty who was acquired from the Mariners in December — has had mixed result for Pawtucket.
“Yes, the candidate pool is going to be internal,” Farrell said. “Clay, Elias, Joe Kelly, Henry Owens — someone grab it.”
