Hill to skip start with groin injury

HOUSTON — A’s left-hander Rich Hill has been scratched from his scheduled start Saturday, after experiencing groin discomfort while throwing from flat ground Friday.

Right-hander Kendall Graveman, initially pegged to go Sunday, will pitch in Hill’s place against the Astros on normal rest. That leaves the A’s without a starter for Sunday in Houston.

Before the announcement was made Friday, A’s manager Bob Melvin said, “We want to make sure [Hill] is as close to 100 percent as he can be, and we’re not certain after throwing a flat ground [session].”

Hill, the American League Pitcher of the Month for May, last pitched Saturday, departing in the seventh inning with a mild groin strain.
