Andy Murray’s game in the right place at the right time

PARIS — Defending champion Stan Wawrinka had just carved out an 11th-hour service break to stay alive in this French Open semifinal match against Andy Murray. Now, as Wawrinka ran off the court screaming, the crowd at Court Philippe Chatrier was roaring for him.

But in the bedlam, it was easy to miss how the second-seeded Murray put his finger to his lips and gestured, “Shhh!” as he walked off the court, staring straight ahead.

All wasn’t lost for him yet.

Wawrinka kept Murray on the court longer than Murray wanted to be. But in the end, Murray shook off an 0-3 career record on clay against the Swiss veteran and his 0-3 personal record in semifinals at Roland Garros to storm back in the fourth set. Murray advanced to the French Open final for the first time with a 6-4, 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 win.

To no one’s surprise, top-ranked Novak Djokovic will be waiting there for Murray come Sunday. Djokovic schooled 22-year-old Dominic Thiem 6-2, 6-1, 6-4 in their briskly played 1-hour, 48-minute semifinal. The match was moved to Court Suzanne Lenglen to help ensure it was played before any more rain could make a mess of the match.

The fans who scooped up the unexpected chance to see their showdown for the bargain price of 20 Euros made the atmosphere so festive that Djokovic compared it to a Davis Cup match.

Friday marked Thiem’s first run this deep in a Grand Slam tournament, and by the end, he looked like Djokovic had him in a vise the entire match. Thiem had trouble crowbarring points away from Djokovic even on his own service games.

“He doesn’t give you any presents,” the young Austrian said.

Murray won’t be expecting any when he and Djokovic meet.

Neither man has ever won the French Open. But Murray arrived at Roland Garros fresh off a clay-court win against Djokovic in the Italian Open final after a loss to the Serb just before that in the final in Madrid.
