Gibson scratched from start with back issue

MINNEAPOLIS — Twins right-hander Kyle Gibson was scratched from his scheduled start against the Rays on Thursday, as he’s been dealing with lower back stiffness and will remain on the 15-day disabled list.
Right-hander Phil Hughes, who was moved to the bullpen in anticipation of Gibson’s return, rejoined the rotation to start the series opener against the Rays. Hughes’ move to the bullpen was a short one, as he never pitched in relief in Minnesota’s series against the A’s. His last start came on Saturday, so he was on regular rest on Thursday.
Gibson, who is on the DL retroactive to April 23 with a right shoulder strain, was slated to start against the Rays after faring well in two rehab outings with Class A Advanced Fort Myers. But he said his back started to bother him on Monday, and didn’t get any better, so the Twins decided to be cautious and push back his start.
