Algeria seal qualification with victory over Seychelles

Algeria assured qualification for AFCON 2017 in Gabon thanks to a hard fought 2-0 away win over Seychelles at Stade Linite on Thursday evening.

The encounter was dubbed a ‘David and Goliath’ affair considering that the Algerians are the top ranked team in Africa against Seychelles placed at 51st on the continental rankings.

After a bright start by the Algerians who were looking for an early goal to calm their nerves, the host managed to keep their more illustrious opponent at bay.

Nonetheless, Yassine Benzia who plies his trade with French side Lille had two decent chances to break the deadlock but fluffed his lines to give the local team the confidence to go forward in search of an opening goal.

The islanders though gifted the visiting ‘Fennecs’ the opener in the 40th minute as they twice failed to clear a dangerous situation allowing Benzia to turn and hook the ball past Seychelles goalkeeper and captain Vincent Euphrasie for a lone goal lead at the interval.

Benzia though had to leave the pitch in the 56th minute with a head injury but his team stretched their lead just past the hour mark.
