Lingfield doubles for Cosgrave, Atzeni

A review of Thursday’s action at Lingfied, where there were doubles for jockeys Andrea Atzeni and Pat Cosgrave.

Andrea Atzeni warmed up for a host of exciting rides at the Investec Derby Festival when he teamed up with trainer Roger Varian to secure a short-priced double at Lingfield.

The Classic-winning jockey, who will ride Ulysses in the Investec Derby and odds-on favourite Postponed in the Coronation Cup, got his afternoon off to the perfect start when Golden Slam (9/2) struck by a short head in the John & Joan Goodall Memorial Novice Median Auction Stakes.

Atzeni said: “He is a big, raw horse that will do better on better ground. He improved from his first to second run and he should improve again.

“I spoke to Roger Varian coming here and he said to make sure I got him rolling as last time he fell out the stalls and run too green. He said get him up there and use his experience and, really, to be fair to him, he stuck his neck out well.”

After being denied by Ribblesdale Stakes entry Daphne last time out, Talent To Amuse gained compensation in the 188Bet.co.uk Maiden Auction Stakes to complete Atzeni’s and Varian’s brace.
