Kyle Hendricks Q&A: What made him angry?

CHICAGO — Chicago Cubs starter Kyle Hendricks takes the mound on Thursday afternoon against the Los Angeles Dodgers coming off his second career complete game, which came Saturday against the Philadelphia Phillies. He has a 2.93 ERA as he takes the ball for his 10th start of the season.

Did you make a point of celebrating your complete game on Saturday?

KH: I went out to dinner. My fiancé, my dad, the [Justin Grimm family] came with us and [Grimm’s] wife’s parents. We had a good time. A good dinner. We took it in. Those are fun, but you have to turn the page quickly and start thinking of the next one.

Did someone at least buy your dinner after a complete game? That’s the least they can do.

KH: Ha, nope. I paid for it. I’m not [Jake] Arrieta yet. I haven’t made it that far.

What’s that feeling like as you walk off the mound being able to throw the last pitch of the game? It doesn’t happen often these days.

KH: Honestly, you’re just happy. You’re happy you made it deep into the game and you’re happy you went that far and just happy you won the game. I’ve been trying to work deeper in games and it worked out.

What’s recovery like after an outing like that?

KH: About the same as normal. It was only 105 pitches, so there was a little more up and down going out for nine innings, but I stayed on the same pace this week. I threw twice, so I feel good.
