Orioles don’t need long ball to score 13 in slugfest win over Red Sox

BALTIMORE — The offseason scouting report on the 2016 Baltimore Orioles was that in order for them to contend, they’d need to win plenty of slugfests. Wednesday’s 13-9 victory over the Boston Red Sox was the poster child for that forecast.
It was the kind of game where No. 5 starter Mike Wright predictably got lit up, lasting just 2 2/3 innings and surrendering four bombs, including another pair to Mookie Betts, who became the first player in major league history to homer in the first and second inning of consecutive games.
It was the kind of game where the Orioles put up a four-spot in the first inning, the first time in almost a year that they tallied four-plus runs in the opening stanza.
It was the kind of game where the score was already 8-7 after three innings (because Buck Showatler wisely decided to go for the 2-point conversion), the first time this season that two teams had each plated at least a touchdown in the first three frames.
