Michael Fulmer keeps on battling, keeps on winning

Yoenis Cespedes may be one of the best power hitters in baseball, but the Detroit Tigers look to be making out pretty well with their return in last year’s deadline deal with the Mets, rookie pitcher Michael Fulmer.
Fulmer has allowed one run in 22 1/3 innings pitched in his last three starts, the last being the most impressive, 7 2/3 two-hit innings against the Angels on Wednesday night. He took a no-hit bid into the seventh inning, the first time in his seven-start career that he’d even taken one beyond two innings.
Fulmer has made quite a name for himself, considering he had a 6.52 ERA in his first four starts and was on the verge of being sent back to the minor leagues.
How he’s winning
What’s made Fulmer looks so good of late is how he’s bounced back from falling behind in the count. Opponents are 3-for-39 (.077 batting average) with four walks after being down in the count 1-0 in his last four starts. It will be challenging to sustain the .163 opponents’ on-base percentage he’s had in those situations. The major-league average …
