LeMahieu seeing uptick in extra-base hits

DENVER — Second baseman DJ LeMahieu has been one of the Rockies’ most consistent hitters this season with his batting average never dipping below .288.
LeMahieu’ power, however, has disappeared at times, but he is having a recent resurgence.
After recording five extra-base hits in his first six games, LeMahieu cooled off to hit only seven extra base hits — and no home runs — in his next 38 games. Now, LeMahieu has five extra-base hits in his last three games, including a near cycle in a 17-4 win over the Reds on Tuesday.
“I always felt like the extra-base hits would come with DJ,” Rockies manager Walt Weiss said. “He’s maturing as a hitter over the last year and a half. You’re seeing him start to slug a little bit, not that that’s ever going to be a vital part of his game, but I feel like it’s in there, and he’s showing that. The ball he hit to center field, that ball’s crushed last night.”
