Byrd gets 162-game suspension for PEDs

CLEVELAND — Outfielder Marlon Byrd will miss the remainder of the season, and possibly face the end of his playing career, after his second violation of Major League Baseball’s Joint Drug and Prevention Program.
MLB announced on Wednesday that Byrd has been suspended 162 games after testing positive for the growth hormone secretagogue Ipamorelin, a performance-enhancing substance that is banned under the league’s program. It is the second career suspension for Byrd, who was hit with a 50-game punishment in 2012 for Tamoxifen, a drug used for breast-cancer treatment that can also be used to reduce the side effects of steroid use.
Chris Antonetti, the Indians’ president of baseball operations, and manager Terry Francona are scheduled to discuss the matter with reporters prior to Wednesday’s game against the Rangers. According to Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports.com, Byrd did not appeal the suspension.
