Cespedes in line to start ASG at 1st NL update

NEW YORK — Yoenis Cespedes is putting up the best first-half numbers of his career, and in doing so, the Mets outfielder is making a bid for his second career All-Star selection.

Major League Baseball released the first weekly voting update of the 2016 Esurance All-Star Game Ballot for the National League on Wednesday, and Cespedes has the third-most votes among outfielders, with 792,395.

Cespedes trails only the Nationals’ Bryce Harper — who has the second-most votes in the NL behind the Cubs’ Anthony Rizzo — and Chicago’s Dexter Fowler.

In his lone All-Star season in 2014 with the Athletics, Cespedes batted .246 with 14 home runs and 56 RBIs before the break. Through 47 games this season, the 30-year-old slugger was batting .275 with 15 homers and 37 RBIs.

Alongside Cespedes, six other Mets rank among the top vote-getters at their position. Fellow outfielders Michael Conforto and Curtis Granderson rank eighth and 13th, respectively.
