Novak Djokovic’s dream of winning a maiden French Open crown endured on Wednesday after the world No. 1 battled through rain delays to record a 4-6, 6-4, 6-1, 7-5 fourth-round victory over Roberto Bautista Agut.
The Serb conceded a set for the first time in this year’s tournament, but he fought back with a vengeance to beat his defiant Spanish opponent into submission, concluding their clash on Wednesday morning.
Djokovic will encounter Tomas Berdych in the next phase of his Roland Garros campaign after he defeated David Ferrer 6-3, 7-5, 6-3 on Wednesday, with David Goffin and 13th-seed Dominic Thiem also making it through.
Serena Williams also booked her spot in the quarters after trouncing Elina Svitolina 6-1, 6-1, but sister Venus was unable to join her and fell out of the running with a 6-2, 6-4 defeat to Timea Bacsinszky.
