At 35 years old, Ben Zobrist is a deserving player of the month

CHICAGO – OK, so Ben Zobrist probably wishes there were 30 days in May, but can there be any other choice for National League player of the month other than the Chicago Cubs second baseman? After he saw his career-high 16-game hit streak and run of getting on base in 35 starts end Tuesday night against the Los Angeles Dodgers – he also struck out three times – Zobrist still hit .406 in May.
He turned 35 a week ago.
If it were up to teammate David Ross it would be an easy decision for the league, which will announce the winner on Thursday.

“He is the player of the month for sure,” Ross said before Tuesday’s game. “He’s the player of the year so far for me. He has quickly become my favorite player in all of major league baseball. This guy is the most professional player I’ve ever been around. He comes in every day, same routine, same intensity.”
Ross isn’t exaggerating. Zobrist is that impressive, and the results this past month are eye-popping. Among regulars he had the highest on-base percentage (.483) in the NL, while only seven players hit …
