Dominic Thiem: ‘I never practiced in the woods! Resnik did not influence me that much’

Dominic Thiem’s breakthrough was known for his special training sessions with his former fitness coach Sepp Resnik. But probably it’s not true that Dominic Thiem ran many nights in the woods or that he apparently woke up at midnight to do sit-ups for 45 minutes.
This story was denied by Thiem himself in an interview to Sport Week (quotes recognized by TennisBest). The Austrian revealed, “I put myself on a tree trunk only that time [when we did the photoshoot], because the photographer did not like the idea of shooting in the gym. I worked with Resnik, but he did not influence me that much. Let’s say that with him or without him, I would be where I am now.” But there’s some truth to what Resnik revealed. According to Thiem, there’s only one element of truth to Resnik’s revelations. He said, “We were in Italy to play a Futures event (in Este, near Padova). I played a point very badly and lost the second set. He was complaining that I did not show my emotions enough, on the court and so I broke the racket. Then I remembered that it was his birthday, I launched a racket on the grounds screaming “Happy Birthday!” But all the rest, the runs in the woods during the night, swim in the middle of the River in the winter, bah!” Thiem also talked about the people to whom he owes his success. “My parents, they were tennis coaches.
