McCann’s historic errorless streak ends

DETROIT — James McCann’s throwing error not only cost the Tigers a run in Monday night’s 5-1 loss to the Angels, it cost the catcher his historic run without an error.

McCann went 139 Major League games without an error since first being called up in 2013. That’s where the streak ended, but it stands as the longest by a catcher to begin his big league career.

McCann had long since eclipsed the previous record. Former Cleveland Indians backstop Frankie Pytlak held the old mark at 93 games, compiled from 1932-34.
