Braves trade Grilli to Blue Jays for Minor Leaguer

ATLANTA — Jason Grilli realized his goal to be on Atlanta’s Opening Day roster this year. But as the season’s first two months elapsed, the 39-year-old reliever provided constant reminders he is not the same reliable bullpen piece he was before he tore his left Achilles tendon in July.

After spending the past couple of weeks discussing their option to release Grilli, the Braves instead got something in return when they traded him and cash to the Blue Jays on Friday for Minor League reliever Sean Ratcliffe.

Financial specifics were not immediately revealed, but the Braves will be responsible for a prorated portion of Grilli’s $3.5 million salary.

Accounting for the financial elements of the deal, the Braves were simply willing to get something in return for a pitcher they likely would have released in the near future.
