Sore left ankle forces Reds’ Phillips out

DENVER — Bothered by a sore left ankle that stemmed from crashing into a wall on Sunday, Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips was forced to exit Monday’s 11-8 win over the Rockies in the seventh inning.
Phillips, who rarely likes to leave games for injuries, was replaced by pinch-hitter Ivan De Jesus Jr. after he went 1-for-3 with an infield single while clearly not 100 percent running. X-rays taken after his departure were negative.
“It just wasn’t getting any better,” Reds manager Bryan Price said. “It was gradually a little bit more sore. He wanted to play and wanted to stick it out. As the game progressed, it just didn’t make sense. We’ll see how he is [Tuesday]. He’s a little banged up …
