Leake values longtime friendship with Baker

WASHINGTON — Cardinals right-hander Mike Leake said he considers Nationals manager Dusty Baker a mentor. Leake said it’s tough to put into words how he feels about Baker. Leake played for Baker with the Reds from 2010-13.
A year after being the eighth overall pick in the 2009 Draft, selected by the Reds, Leake was a member of Baker’s rotation.
“He was a big-time mentor for me during my first time coming into the league,” Leake said. “I couldn’t have asked for a better manager to have. It was a special relationship from the start. I don’t know if words could explain it. There is a connection. He knew people that I knew and I knew people that he knew. It grew from there.
