Cardinals DFA Tejada with Carpenter back

WASHINGTON — The Cardinals designated Ruben Tejada for assignment on Saturday to clear room for Matt Carpenter’s return from paternity leave.
Tejada is 6-for-34 (.176) with two doubles on the season, his first in St. Louis. The infielder signed a one-year, $1.5 million contract with the Cardinals in March after being released by the Mets.
Tejada entered the season as the Cardinals’ presumptive starting shortstop, but a hot start from rookie Aledmys Diaz limited his role.
“We weren’t getting Ruben much work,” manager Mike Matheny said. “It was different from what he thought it might be and different from what we thought it might be.”
Tejada can now choose to accept the Cardinals’ assignment to Triple-A or sign with another team.
