Moeen Ali took England beyond 400 on the second morning at Chester-le-Street as Sri Lanka’s fielding went from awesome to abysmal overnight. Both Moeen and Chris Woakes gave early chances and the pair went on to add 92 for the seventh wicket before some rewards came the way of Sri Lanka’s seamers.
It was a different Sri Lanka fielding side which emerged for the second day’s play after their four outstanding grabs on Friday. In the fourth over, Moeen was given a life on 36 when Dimuth Karunaratne could not hold a chance at the finer of the two gullies. Woakes’ reprieve, before he had added to his overnight 8, was a sitter to Dinesh Chandimal behind the stumps but the wicketkeeper, clearly struggling with a thumb injury, did not even get a glove on the ball.
