Baseball greats to play in Saturday’s HOF Classic

COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. — The summer season at the National Baseball Hall of Fame begins on Saturday with the sixth annual Hall of Fame Classic at Doubleday Field, and it will continue until July 24, when Ken Griffey Jr. and Mike Piazza are inducted on the stage behind the nearby Clark Sports Center.
Saturday’s Legends Game, preceded by a Home Run Derby, pits mostly recent Major League retirees in a seven-inning affair, which will likely be played this year in near-90-degree heat.
Juan Pierre (left field), Melvin Mora (third base), Andruw Jones (center field), Michael Barrett (catcher), Jerry Hairston Jr. (second base), Terrence Long (right field), Desi Relaford (first base), Alan Trammell (shortstop) and Jeff Suppan (pitcher) are the projected starting nine for the Knucksies, managed this year by Hall of Famer Jim Rice.
