Longtime matchmaker Hedi dies at 68

Renowned boxing matchmaker Touab Mohamed Hedi, who helped build the careers of numerous world titleholders throughout Europe, died this week in his hometown of Koblenz, Germany, after a battle with cancer. He was 68.
Known simply as Hedi, he had a rough, gravelly voice and sharp wit that he used often in a high-pressure business where he excelled as the longtime matchmaker for now-defunct promotional company Universum Box-Promotion, which was a German powerhouse from the 1980s until its bankruptcy in 2012.
More recently, Hedi was the matchmaker for Ulf Steinforth’s SES Boxing, and he also assisted promoters such as Frank Warren in the United Kingdom and Branco Milenkovic in South Africa.
Born in Tunisia in 1947 — he later moved to Germany — Hedi was able to quickly book fights thanks in large part to his fluency in German, English, French, Italian and Arabic.
