Longtime matchmaker Hedi dies at age of 68

Renowned matchmaker Touab Mohamed Hedi, who helped build the careers of numerous world titleholders throughout Europe, died this week in his hometown of Koblenz, Germany after a battle with cancer. He was 68.
Known to all who knew him simply as Hedi, he had a rough, gravely voice and sharp wit that he often needed in a high-pressure business. But he excelled at it as the longtime matchmaker for now-defunct promotional company, Universum Box-Promotion, the onetime German powerhouse from the 1980s until its bankruptcy in 2012.
More recently, Hedi was the matchmaker for Ulf Steinforth’s SES Boxing and also assisted promoters such as Frank Warren in the United Kingdom and Branco Milenkovic in South Africa over the years.
Born in Tunisia in 1947 before moving to Germany, Hedi was able to book fights in a quick fashion thanks in large part because he was fluent in German, English, French, Italian and Arabic, which made communication with promoters, managers and fighters around the world easy for …
