2016 NCAA Division III Women’s Championship: Emory edges Williams 5-4 to win the title for the 7th time!

Stowe Stadium in Kalamazoo, Michigan, was the arena of the ultimate encounter in the last match of 2016 NCAA Division III Women’s Championship, what for sure was the duel of the tournament! Top seeds, Emory Eagles and Williams Ephs, were engaged in an amazing final, which Emory in the end took by 5-4, winning the final two points after trailing 4-3. This was the 7th NCAA title for Emory, first after 2014, finishing the season with a 28-5 score. Two best schools in Division played in the final for the 5th time, and the Eagles has won for the first time (12 months ago they were also in the final). Williams ends this season with a 22-4 score, breaking the 10-match winning strike before the title match. Williams had the advantage from the first point and held it constantly before the last singles match on court 2, where the Eagles performed a complete comeback to steal the trophy from their great rivals. The Ephs, defending champions, had a nice start, taking the first two doubles point to get the things underway. Juli Raventos/Linda Shin had no troubles to beat Anna Fuhr/Madison Gordon 8-2 on the main court, and they were backed by Hannah Atkinson/Julia Cancio who toppled Bridget Harding/Katarina Su 8-3 on court 2, building an initial 2-0 lead for Williams. It could have been an almost hopeless situation for the Eagles if they lost the match on court 3 as well, but Paula Castro/Michelle Satterfield did well to prevent that, defeating Maya Hart/Giulia …
